Carrefour started trading on December 4, 1960. It’s a French multinational retailer headquartered in Boulogne Billancourt, France, in the Hauts-de-Seine Department near Paris. Carrefour operates over 12,000 stores with more than 360,000 employees in 29 countries, in Europe, Asia and Africa.

History Carrefour Uae

The first Carrefour was opened in Annecy, France on January 1st 1958. It was started by three friends Marcel Fournier, Denis Defforey, and Jacques Defforey who believed they could one day successfully bring an idea across the pond of retailing to Europe. They were influenced by Bernardo Trujillo, but had nothing to do with his seminars. Rather Trujillo’s influence helped get their venture off the ground.

Carrefour was the first of its kind, building self-service hypermarkets and supermarkets at one store. Their first store opened its doors on June 15th 1963 in Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois, near Paris, France. They also introduced free brands as a way to reduce their operational expenses which is now a standard practice among other major retailers such as Walmart and Target.

It was in 1976 that Carrefour debuted the original offering of the revolutionary branded product line – a series of fifty foodstuffs, including oil, biscuits (crackers and cookies), milk, and pasta – sold in unbranded packaging at a lower price. In 2009, Carrefour took a step forward by updating its brand logo to reflect this evolution.
